The Department of Civil and Building Engineering at Loughborough University has an excellent research record being rated 5 in the built environment in the last RAE. Its research in Construction Management has an international reputation and has focused not only on traditional areas of construction management but also on new ways of working and new business relationships. A particular focus has been on Information Management, especially in the areas of: data exchange formats for construction management information; information transfer in design and build; and multimedia communications. This work encompasses both technological and organisational issues. Relevant recent research projects include: ‘Identifying and Testing Processes that bring together Sustainable and Efficient Construction’ (DETR grant, Partners in Innovation Programme), Achieving clients' requirements through co-ordinated collaborative design (EPSRC grant); Design information methodology and tools for the management of detailed building design (Link IDAC 100); Improving information transfer within a design and build environment by modelling and simulation (EPSRC grant); Improving supply chain communications in construction (IMI); The COMPOSITE (Communication by Computer Between Main Participating Organisations on Site) project, funded jointly by industry and DETR; ELSEWISE (European Large Scale Engineering Wide Integration Support Effort); and GENIAL (Global Engineering Network: Intelligent Access Libraries), both funded by the European Union and an industry consortium; IT Tools and Support for Improved Construction Briefing LINK IDAC 5/32, Generic Design and Process Protocol which is an IMI project in its second phase involving Loughborough University and the University of Salford.
